BAYC Parent Yuga Labs Hires Former Activision Blizzard's Head as Chief Executive

Daniel Alegre has served as operating chief at Activision Blizzard since April 2020.

Activision Blizzard's Chief Operating Officer Daniel Alegre will become the CEO of Yuga Labs, which creates Bored Ape NFT, the metaverse firm announced on Monday.

The announcement follows a lawsuit filed by the Biden administration to stop Microsoft's $69 billion (about Rs. 5,70,300) acquisition of Activision.

In the first part of 2023, Alegre, who has been the operating director at the videogame publisher since April 2020, will follow Nicole Muniz as CEO of Yuga. Muniz will continue to serve the business as a partner and strategic advisor.

An inquiry for comment from Reuters was not immediately answered by Activision.

"Since debuting in 2021 with Bored Ape Yacht Club, Yuga Labs has rapidly established itself through a powerful combination of storytelling and community-building,” Alegre said.

The business announced its valuation in March at $4 billion, or around Rs 33,100 crore, following a $450 million fundraising round, which was led by a16z crypto, Andreessen Horowitz's cryptocurrency fund.

A non-fungible token, also known as an NFT, is a digital asset that uses blockchain technology to keep track of who owns digital items including images, videos, and in-game items. On social media, Bored Ape NFTs are frequently used as profile images.

Spencer Tucker was named as Yuga Labs' Chief Gaming Officer back in September. The 2021-founded Yuga Labs hired a dedicated leader to head up its gaming-related strategies and initiatives for the first time.

Prior to this, Tucker held the positions of Senior Vice President of Product and President of Games at Scopely  at Gree International Entertainment.
