According to legend, this festival commemorates the ancient maritime history of Odisha, when traders used to sail to distant lands for trade. On this day, people gather near the riverside and float tiny boats made of banana stems, paper, or cork. The ritual is believed to symbolize the journey of the traders and their return with wealth and prosperity.


In the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Chaitra Purnima is celebrated as "Chitirai Purnima". On this day, devotees offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and take a holy dip in the sacred rivers. They also visit temples, seek blessings, and perform traditional rituals.
