Google Introduces Magic Compose Beta: AI-Enhanced Conversation Tone Control in Messages App

Google is introducing a new AI-powered feature called Magic Compose beta in its Messages app, allowing users to fine-tune their conversation tone. With the help of Bard, Google's version of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, Magic Compose can rephrase text messages in seven different styles, including Remix, Excited, Chill, Shakespeare, Lyrical, Formal, and Short. While the feature is currently available only on Android phones with RCS-enabled US SIM cards, users can enable it from the app's Settings menu once it becomes accessible to them.


However, there is a notable aspect to consider. In order to generate suggestions, Magic Compose will send up to "20 previous messages" to Google's servers, even if the user is utilizing RCS with end-to-end encryption. Google clarifies this in its Magic Compose support page, assuring users that the messages, along with any included emoji, reactions, and URLs, are solely used to provide relevant suggestions for the ongoing conversation. The company emphasizes that it does not store messages or utilize them for training machine learning models. Nevertheless, while Messages with attachments, voice messages, and images are not sent to Google servers, image captions and voice transcriptions may be shared.


Magic Compose is one of several AI-powered features unveiled by Google during its recent I/O event. Additionally, the company is introducing its Search Generative Experience features to select users in the US. This new feature presents summarized answers at the top of search results, enhancing the search experience by quickly providing relevant information.


Meanwhile, Microsoft has already implemented a similar feature in its keyboard app, SwiftKey, enabling users to adjust conversation tones. However, Microsoft's implementation is more universal, allowing users to access conversation tones across a wide range of apps. In contrast, Google's Magic Compose feature is currently limited to the Google Messages app.


As AI continues to advance, technology companies are integrating AI capabilities into various applications to enhance user experiences. Google's Magic Compose beta showcases the potential of AI in refining conversation tones, providing users with more options and customization in their text messages. Although the feature's reliance on sending previous messages to Google's servers may raise privacy concerns for some users, Google's assurances and transparency regarding the use of this data may alleviate some of these apprehensions. As the feature expands its availability and incorporates user feedback, it is expected to evolve and improve, further enhancing communication experiences within the Messages app.
