Bengaluru Metro Launches QR Ticketing Service on WhatsApp for Commuters

BMRCL claimed it is the first transit service globally to enable end-to-end QR ticketing on WhatsApp.

Monday saw the official announcement of a collaboration between WhatsApp and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to introduce Namma Metro's WhatsApp chatbot-based QR ticketing service.

'Namma Metro' riders will be able to buy tickets and recharge their travel pass directly within WhatsApp thanks to the chatbot's integration with UPI-powered payments on that platform.

BMRCL asserted that it is the first public transportation system in the world to support end-to-end QR ticketing on WhatsApp.

The company claimed that all "Namma Metro" commuters can use its English and Kannada-speaking WhatsApp chatbot.

Commuters can use the service by sending a simple "Hello" to BMRCL's official WhatsApp chatbot number +9181055 56677. From there, they can select from a variety of choices, including recharging their metro travel pass and buying single-trip tickets using payments made through WhatsApp.

FMovies selecting their travel details, users are given the option to pay using payments on WhatsApp by authenticating the transaction with their UPI pin, according to the BMRCL. "The process of making the payment is a seamless experience that gives users the option to pay without leaving the WhatsApp chat interface," the BMRCL said.

It added that commuters may plan their travel on-the-go and make payments without leaving the WhatsApp chat, saying that the interface makes the user experience simple and dynamic.

Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), which runs the city's Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro system, introduced a "e-ticket on WhatsApp" feature earlier this year.

Mumbai Metro One claimed in 2016 that it was the first MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) to offer an electronic ticket on WhatsApp a release.

It claimed that this was an expansion of the "Paper QR Ticket" that is already sold at ticket counters. To use the service, travellers must text the word "Hi" to the number 9670008889.
