Ernie Bot: Baidu's AI-Powered Chatbot Set to Transform Search Engine Experience
Baidu, a leading Chinese technology company, is investing heavily in artificial intelligence and plans to use its new chatbot app, Ernie Bot, to create a revolutionary version of its search engine. The company expects the generative AI technology powering Ernie Bot to enhance the user experience and increase engagement, making users more reliant on Baidu's search engine. This is expected to boost Baidu's main source of revenue, online advertising, and help the company to build an AI ecosystem around Ernie Bot. Baidu has already attracted over 400 companies that want to join the Ernie Bot community as early users of the app.
In recent years, Baidu has expanded its core business to include AI, cloud services, and autonomous driving, in addition to investing in research and development. Despite facing competition from other companies, such as Tencent's WeChat and Bytedance's Douyin, Baidu is considered a leader in the efforts to create a Chinese rival to OpenAI, the AI platform backed by Microsoft.
Baidu's CEO believes that the generative AI technology underpinning Ernie Bot will also be a productivity boon to other businesses and entrepreneurs looking to build their own apps. Baidu has an advantage as the "first mover" in China's market and has spent years developing large language models that were trained on the billions of daily search requests inputted by its search engine's users. The CEO claims that Ernie Bot is state of the art among large AI-driven language models in terms of understanding China's language and culture.
While OpenAI and ChatGPT are not blocked by Chinese authorities, OpenAI does not allow users in mainland China, Hong Kong, Iran, Russia, and parts of Africa to sign up.
